Everyone knew about all the parties in Indianapolis this week for the Super Bowl. The one party that is being overshadowed is in Scottsdale, Arizona. The par three, 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale. Home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
There’s a stadium inside the golf course that doubles as a cross between a college football game and frat party. The general admission seats fill up quickly and become rowdy throughout the days. The “gentleman” golf etiquette is thrown out the window. Fans will scream, boo, harass, and cheer for the golfers.
“It’s football,” said former Arizona State student Pat Perez, who is a regular on the PGA Tour.
Perez thinks its image as “the loudest hole in golf” creates a top this mentality that makes people “do more every year to make it as loud and obnoxious as possible.”
Anthony Kim thinks it’s fabulous and true to his personality, once urged the crowd to continue booing him because he found it “hilarious.”
Camilo Villegas said, “There’s only one place on Earth, one hole on Earth like that. The fans are crazy. I know there’s a lot of alcohol being served there. . . . ”
As far as the golf went, Kyle Stanley rallied to beat Spencer Levin.
